Chinese Enterprises Provide Relief to Zambian Flood Victims
Chinese enterprises in Zambia have donated relief supplies and cash to aid flood victims during the 2024/2025 rainy season. On Monday, Chinese enterprises operating within Zambia contributed relief supplies to assist the victims of recent floods that have impacted the country during the 2024/2025 rainy season. The donated supplies included essential food items such as maize meal, rice, sugar, and cooking oil, along with non-food essentials like disinfectants, blankets, mattresses, and protective gear, totaling approximately 1.2 million Zambian kwacha (about 42,000 U.S. dollars). Additionally, the enterprises provided a cash donation of about 200,000 kwacha (approximately 7,000 dollars).
The handover ceremony, conducted at the offices of the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit in Lusaka, was attended by notable figures including Zambian Vice President Mutale Nalumango, Wang Sheng, the Charge d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Zambia, and members of the Zambia Chinese Association. Wang expressed empathy for the flood victims, emphasizing China’s commitment to provide ongoing humanitarian assistance as required.
In his address, Wang noted the historical partnerships between Zambia and China, stating, “With similar flood challenges at home, we in China deeply empathize with the pain and loss suffered by the Zambian people.” He reaffirmed China’s readiness to provide timely humanitarian support, citing prior assistance during health crises, reflecting the long-standing relationship built over 60 years.
Vice President Nalumango acknowledged the significance of China’s aid, remarking that it would greatly alleviate the distress faced by victims. She emphasized that this collaboration underscores the strong ties that have existed between the two nations for several decades. Additionally, she reported that the floods resulted in several fatalities and widespread displacement, particularly in Lusaka.
Zhang Jian, president of the Zambia Chinese Association, highlighted that the donation reflects the ongoing efforts of Chinese enterprises to support those in need.
