Eduardo Bolsonaro, son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, will leave Congress to garner support in the United States. He aims to combat perceived persecution against his family and their political faction while also seeking asylum. His efforts are intensified by legal challenges faced by his father, and he expresses intent to advocate for those involved in the January 8 riots.
Eduardo Bolsonaro, son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, announced his temporary leave from Congress to establish support in the United States for his father and their political group. In a ten-minute YouTube video, he expressed his intention to combat what he perceives as persecution against the Bolsonaro family and its allies.
Since late February, Eduardo has been in the United States as part of pre-scheduled travel, although he did not specify his exact location. He later informed CNN Brasil about his plans to seek political asylum.
Following his father’s disqualification from running for office until 2030, Eduardo has amplified his political efforts abroad. Moreover, a request from President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s Workers Party to seize Eduardo’s passport was denied by Brazil’s Supreme Court.
Eduardo aims to bring penalties against officials, including Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who is leading investigations into his father’s alleged misconduct. Additionally, he is advocating for clemency for those involved in the January 8 riots, where government properties were vandalized shortly after President Lula’s inauguration.
Justice Moraes is currently investigating a coup attempt allegedly orchestrated by Jair Bolsonaro and has scrutinized misinformation spread by far-right social media influencers. Furthermore, a legal challenge recently arose from Donald Trump’s media group against Moraes regarding rulings affecting the spread of misinformation. Jair Bolsonaro expressed confidence in the support his son will receive in the U.S., specifically from President Trump.
