The exercise commenced concurrently with China’s deployment of 59 military aircraft and naval ships near Taiwan, which officials labeled a retaliation aimed at President Lai Ching-te’s pro-independence stance. “For the People’s Liberation Army, turning drills into an attack doesn’t take as much time as we imagined in the past,” Koo emphasized to the parliamentary body, insisting on the necessity for Taiwan to remain vigilant.

Koo noted that the rapid-response drills are informed by current intelligence and threat evaluations. He warned that without sustained vigilance, Taiwan risks being unprepared for any hostile actions. Furthermore, Taiwan’s security officials have indicated that China is attempting to normalize its military maneuvers through regular “joint combat readiness patrols,” conducting these drills approximately every seven to ten days. China maintains its claim over Taiwan and has not dismissed the potential for military action to enforce its territorial claims. Conversely, Taiwan firmly opposes these assertions, declaring that its future is to be determined solely by its people.
