Upcoming U.S.-Russia Meeting in Saudi Arabia Focuses on Ceasefire Negotiations
U.S. Special Representative Steve Witkoff announced a meeting in Jeddah for ceasefire discussions with Russia. Previous meetings with President Putin made progress toward a ceasefire focusing on energy and Black Sea maritime issues. The U.S. delegation includes National Security Advisor Waltz and Secretary of State Rubio. President Zelensky expresses conditional support for a ceasefire agreement, citing Ukraine’s readiness to respond to violations.
Steve Witkoff, the Special Representative for the Middle East under U.S. President Donald Trump, announced the next meeting with Russian officials will take place on Sunday in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. During an interview with Fox News, Mr. Witkoff discussed the outcomes of his previous meetings with President Vladimir Putin, where substantial progress was made towards establishing a ceasefire, particularly concerning energy infrastructure and maritime safety in the Black Sea.
In his remarks, Mr. Witkoff noted that discussions with the Russian side had effectively narrowed down the issues at hand. He expressed optimism regarding the potential for reaching a ceasefire that includes provisions for energy infrastructure, which he says Russia has accepted. He anticipates that Ukraine will be amenable to these agreements, though details still need to be finalized.
The American delegation scheduled for this meeting will include notable figures such as U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. This meeting comes shortly after a phone call between Presidents Trump and Putin that focused on strategies to conclude the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Following the discussions between Presidents Trump and Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky voiced support for halting strikes on energy infrastructure as long as Russia adheres to the agreements. He cautioned, however, that Ukraine would retaliate in the event of any violations.
The dialogue facilitated by the U.S. aims to pave the way for a ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine, particularly focusing on energy-related infrastructure and maritime safety. Key American officials are set to engage in negotiations that seek to finalize agreements essential for peace, reflecting an active commitment to resolving the conflict. The outcome remains contingent on cooperation from both Russian and Ukrainian parties.
