Bangladesh is poised for an agricultural boost as China has expressed interest in importing mangoes, jackfruit, and guavas. Chief adviser Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam announced that the Chinese ambassador in Dhaka highlighted the potential for high-volume purchases. Following a proposal by the chief adviser to export these products, discussions will continue during Professor Muhammad Yunus’ upcoming visit to China this month.
Ambassador Yao Wen noted humorously that demand could be so high that Bangladesh might experience a mango shortage. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is supporting Bangladesh with $4 million for enhancing mango export quality. Recently, China’s customs approved the import of mangoes after an expert team visited Bangladesh to evaluate orchards.
This development presents a significant opportunity for Bangladeshi agricultural exports to penetrate China, the world’s second-largest economy. Furthermore, the advisory council announced measures to enhance transparency and reduce corruption in government projects, mandating that all government works be procured through 100% tenders—up from the current 65%.
Additionally, amendments to the Public Procurement Ordinance were made to foster competition by including a new capability matrix, discouraging repetitive contract awards to the same organizations. Online processing of government project tenders will be enhanced to ensure a transparent procurement environment.
Key decisions were also made regarding social issues, including setting a maximum penalty of seven years for certain rape offenses and amending laws regarding abandoned house allotments. An additional Eid holiday was declared for 3 April, along with provisions for optional holidays for ethnic groups in the Chattogram Hill Tracts and beyond.
