Chairperson of African Union Commission Concludes Official Visit to Angola
H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf visited Angola on March 18-19, 2025, meeting President H.E. João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço. They discussed peace and security priorities, emphasizing the need for sustained AU engagement in conflicts such as those in the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, and Somalia. They highlighted the importance of infrastructure development and reaffirmed commitments to the “Silencing the Guns” agenda and AU cooperation with international partners.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, concluded a significant official visit to Angola from March 18-19, 2025. During this visit, he engaged with H.E. João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, the President of Angola and current Chairperson of the African Union. Both leaders recognized the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing peace and security priorities across Africa, focusing on critical situations in countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, and Somalia.
During their discussions, the Chairperson commended President Lourenço for his dedication to peace and security on the continent. They both emphasized a commitment to the Luanda process and highlighted the need for continuous African Union involvement to aid stabilization efforts and encourage inclusive political measures leading to lasting peace and the enhancement of national institutions.
Key points addressed included the enhancement of the African Peace and Security Architecture, increasing the roles of Regional Economic Communities, and reinforcing the African Union Peace and Security Council against emerging threats. A shared commitment to advancing the “Silencing the Guns” agenda was reaffirmed as essential for achieving sustainable peace in Africa.
Furthermore, both leaders articulated a vision for the African Union that prioritizes infrastructure development to propel regional integration, economic transformation, and realization of Agenda 2063. They expressed optimism regarding upcoming platforms including the US-Africa Business Forum in June 2025 and the Summit on Mobilizing Resources for Infrastructure Development in October 2025, both vital for attracting investment.
In addition to meetings with national leaders, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf met with the diplomatic community in Luanda, presenting his vision and strategic priorities for the Commission. He reiterated the AU’s commitment to advancing peace, security, and sustainable development in collaboration with international partners, emphasizing collective interests in these areas.
