Chile Reviews Agreement for Chinese Astronomical Observatory Collaboration
Chile is reviewing a Chinese observatory agreement initially signed in 2016. The Ventarrones Astronomical Park project has faced U.S. scrutiny amidst greater Chinese influence in Latin America. The Chilean government stated the project is “under review, not cancelled,” while seeking more information from local and Chinese entities.
Chile has commenced a review of an agreement concerning the establishment of a Chinese astronomical observatory, following criticisms from the United States related to geopolitical competition in Latin America. This project, which involves the Ventarrones Astronomical Park, was initially established by an agreement signed by President Xi Jinping with Chile’s Catholic University of the North (UCN) in 2016.
The Chilean foreign ministry issued a statement affirming, “The project is under review, it is not cancelled,” although details regarding the reasons for the review were not disclosed. The ministry’s legal department is currently examining the agreement and has reached out to both the UCN and the Chinese embassy for further clarification.
UCN has confirmed that it has provided the necessary information requested by the government. In response, the Chinese embassy characterized the observatory as “an open and transparent international initiative.” In broader contexts, approximately two-thirds of Latin American nations have joined China’s extensive Belt and Road Initiative, signifying a growing economic partnership with China, which has overtaken the United States as the principal trading partner for several countries in the region including Brazil, Peru, and Chile.
