Ikee Rikako, a Japanese swimmer, has successfully met the World Championship qualifying time in the 100m butterfly at the 2025 Japan National Swimming Championships. After announcing her complete remission from leukemia in September 2024, Ikee finished second in the final with a time of 57.53 seconds, securing her place on the national team for the World Championships, which will be held from July 11 to August 3, 2025, in Singapore.
In addition to her performance in the final, Ikee also recorded a time of 57.81 seconds in the heats. Expressing her satisfaction with her performance, she stated that her primary focus was to win the national championship. Ikee remarked, “I’m honestly very happy to have qualified for the national team. The qualifying round was better than I expected and the final was not as good as I expected.”
The swimmer indicated that despite not achieving her desired result, she felt she swam well in front of a large audience. Additionally, Ikee is set to compete in the 100m freestyle and the 50m butterfly events on Saturday, followed by the 50m freestyle on Sunday.
Reflecting on her experience, Ikee mentioned, “I was imagining swimming without any strange nervousness and having a lot of fun. I think it was the first time in a long time that I was able to swim while enjoying the atmosphere of this venue.” Ikee made her Olympic debut in Rio 2016 and is now targeting the LA 2028 Olympic Games, striving to compete at her peak physical condition post-recovery from cancer.
