Indian Navy Remains Vigilant in Indian Ocean Region Amidst Rising Challenges

Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Indian Navy, affirmed the Navy’s thorough monitoring of the Indian Ocean Region’s activities, particularly concerning China’s increasing naval presence. He emphasized the importance of maintaining maritime security through international collaboration and vigilance against illegal practices, asserting India’s commitment to a peaceful and rules-based order in the region.

Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, the Chief of the Indian Navy, emphasized that the Indian Navy is vigilant regarding developments in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). He stated that the Navy comprehensively monitors dual-role vessels, which may be military or surveillance ships disguised for other purposes. This vigilance is particularly crucial as the Chinese navy attempts to expand its presence in the area.

During the Raisina Dialogue-2025, Admiral Tripathi highlighted the challenges posed by China’s strategic maneuvers to increase its influence, jeopardizing the rules-based international order. He expressed that China’s tactics include establishing military bases, pressuring other nations to endorse its maritime claims, and extracting strategic concessions from susceptible states, raising global anxieties about its intentions.

The Admiral underscored the Indian Navy’s commitment to ensuring peace and facilitating unimpeded trade in the IOR, collaborating with various partners both domestically and internationally to maintain maritime domain awareness effectively. He mentioned, “We are capable of maintaining maritime domain awareness in the region.”

Admiral Tripathi noted that the Navy actively monitors suspicious activities in the region, having taken decisive actions against violations. He reiterated the essentiality of cooperative efforts among nations, stating that while individual navies may face limitations, collaborative approaches allow for the sharing of resources and intelligence.

Furthermore, illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing constitutes a significant concern in the Indo-Pacific. The Admiral called attention to the necessity of remaining alert not only in military matters but also in political, technological, and tactical aspects employed by various actors. He concluded by asserting that the Navy is dedicated to preparing for future challenges while assimilating best practices from international partners.

In conclusion, the Indian Navy, under Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi’s leadership, remains acutely aware of its responsibility in the Indian Ocean Region amidst increasing Chinese activity. The emphasis on collaboration with international partners reflects a strategic approach to ensure maritime security and maintain peace. The commitment to vigilance against illegal activities, including IUU fishing, further underscores the Navy’s proactive measures to safeguard trade and territorial integrity.
