He stated, “Glezmann’s release is a positive and constructive step,” simultaneously reminding that other Americans remain detained in Afghanistan. Glezmann is currently on his way back home to his wife, Aleksandra, accompanied by Adam Boehler, who has been addressing hostage matters during the Trump administration.

The Haqqani prisoner’s release is also part of the Taliban’s aim to normalize relations with the United States since the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. This move contrasts earlier arrangements, where Glezmann’s release did not involve the exchange of any prisoners. Previously, a separate deal managed under the Biden administration resulted in the release of two other American detainees, who were exchanged for Khan Mohammed, a Taliban member detained in conflict.

President Biden had considered earlier proposals concerning the possibility of trading Glezmann for other detainees but opted against it due to the continued captivity of Mahmood Habibi, an Afghan-American businessman believed to be held by the Taliban.
