Aircraft Carrier Movements in the Pacific: March 2023 Update
This article reports on the recent deployment and movements of U.S. and Chinese aircraft carriers in the Pacific, highlighting U.S.-Japan-South Korea exercises and China’s naval activities. Key carriers from France and India are also mentioned in the context of ongoing military drills.
This week, the United States deployed one of its aircraft carriers for a trilateral naval exercise with Japan and South Korea, demonstrating military strength in response to North Korea’s actions. Concurrently, China’s most advanced aircraft carrier, still undergoing trials, was observed departing its shipyard. Additionally, France engaged in joint naval exercises with India in the Arabian Sea.
As of March 21, a total of 13 aircraft carriers’ positions were identified in the Indo-Pacific region, thanks to military reports and satellite imagery. The U.S. continues to hold the largest fleet globally, with 11 active carriers, while China ranks second with three operational carriers.
The USS Carl Vinson was operating in the Philippine Sea, southeast of Japan’s Kyushu island. It had recently engaged in a naval drill in the East China Sea alongside Japanese and South Korean naval forces. The USS George Washington remained docked at Yokosuka naval base for the week, and both the USS Theodore Roosevelt and USS Abraham Lincoln were confirmed to be at Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego.
Furthermore, the USS Nimitz and USS Ronald Reagan were noted to be at Naval Base Kitsap in Bremerton, Washington, with the latter undergoing maintenance at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
In China’s naval operations, the CNS Liaoning, China’s first operational aircraft carrier, was seen at its home port in Qingdao. Conversely, the CNS Shandong did not exhibit any movement from its base in Sanya, Hainan. The latest carrier, CNS Fujian, was noted for conducting its seventh sea trial in the East China Sea after departing the Jiangnan Shipyard.
Japan’s JS Kaga, which is under conversion into an aircraft carrier, was stationed in Kure, while the JS Izumo is scheduled for conversion, remaining in Yokohama until 2027. Additionally, the FS Charles de Gaulle from the French Navy was involved in a maritime exercise with the Indian Navy in the Arabian Sea during the week, alongside India’s INS Vikrant.
In conclusion, flight activity and military preparedness in the Pacific are highly notable, with significant naval exercises taking place among the U.S., Japan, South Korea, and collaborative efforts between France and India. The ongoing developments highlight the strategic positioning of aircraft carriers from both U.S. and Chinese fleets, underscoring the volatility of the region and the importance of naval power in ensuring security.
