Chile Allocates $25 Million for Hydrogen Electrolyser Manufacturing Projects
Chile is investing $25 million from lithium revenues to develop hydrogen electrolyser assembly plants. The funding will generate over $50 million in investments and create approximately 1,000 jobs. The government is targeting 5 GW of green hydrogen production by 2025 and 25 GW by 2030 while exploring various applications to support industrial decarbonization.
Chile is allocating $25 million from lithium mining proceeds to boost the manufacturing and assembly of hydrogen electrolysers. The national development agency, Corfo, has awarded financing for three projects that are anticipated to generate over $50 million in investments and create approximately 1,000 jobs. José Miguel Benavente, Corfo’s executive vice president, emphasizes that this funding derives from lithium exploitation contracts in the Salar de Atacama.
The government of Chile is formulating a regulatory framework to support the burgeoning green hydrogen industry, aiming for the production of 5 gigawatts of green hydrogen by 2025 and increasing to 25 gigawatts by 2030. This initiative seeks to aid industrial decarbonisation and focuses on six specific applications: oil refineries, ammonia production, mining haul trucks, heavy-duty trucks, long-range buses, and gas grid blending with a limit of 20%.
In Santiago, Chile-based Fastpack is developing a $10 million facility for assembling alkaline electrolysers with capacities ranging from 10 kilowatts to 50 megawatts, alongside proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysers between 50 kW and 1 MW, and auxiliary systems. Fastpack’s partners include Mining3 Chile, L&A Ingeniería y Proyectos, Adolfo Ibáñez University, and Jiangsu Guofu Hydrogen Energy Equipment Co. from China.
Beijing SinoHy Energy, in partnership with Constructora Manuel Enríquez Talcahuano and equipment provider Conmetal, is set to establish a factory by mid-2026 for assembling alkaline electrolysers with capacities of 2.5-5 MW, along with producing structural components and importing specialized materials such as membranes and catalysts.
Joltech Solutions, a spin-off of the Catalan Institute of Chemical Research, is also on track to launch its assembly plant in mid-2026, developed in collaboration with the University of Concepción and local engineering firm Enertex. Its electrolysers will range from 100 kW to 1 MW in capacity.
Benavente highlights that the primary objective of Corfo is to fulfill the demand for various production plants in the country more expeditiously, thereby positioning Chile to play a significant role in a world-class engineering manufacturing sector and fostering local connections associated with the green hydrogen industry.
