Mao Ning, a spokeswoman for the Foreign Ministry, stated, “China welcomes Senator Daines’s visit and it also welcomes Americans from all walks of life, including members of Congress, to visit China.” She emphasized the importance of stable China-U.S. relations for both peoples and the international community.

Since January, President Trump has imposed tariffs on key trading partners, including China, due to trade imbalances and issues with fentanyl smuggling from Mexico into the U.S. Daines indicated he would raise these critical matters with Chinese officials during his visit.

Daines stated, “We know… it’s the Mexican cartels that are producing the fentanyl but those precursors, the raw materials, come from China.” He expressed his intention to discuss with Chinese leadership about actions they can take to control the flow of chemicals into Mexico that subsequently lead to fentanyl entering the U.S.

In addition, he plans to tackle the significant trade imbalance tallying to $300 billion. He asserted, “This will be about fentanyl. It will also be about this $300 billion trade deficit that we have with China, what we can do to change the trade practices.” Daines noted that there are opportunities for more American exports to China.

Recently, Trump revealed that Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to visit the United States soon, although Beijing has yet to confirm any such plans.
