Chinese Enterprises Provide Critical Relief Supplies to Zambian Flood Victims

On March 17, 2025, Chinese enterprises in Zambia generously donated relief supplies to assist victims affected by significant floods during the 2024/2025 rainy season. The donated items included essential food items such as maize meal, rice, sugar, and cooking oil, alongside non-food items like disinfectants, blankets, mattresses, and protective gear, totaling approximately 1.2 million Zambian kwacha (about 42,000 U.S. dollars). Additionally, a cash donation of around 200,000 kwacha (approximately 7,000 dollars) was also provided.

The handover ceremony took place in Lusaka at the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit’s offices, with attendance from Zambian Vice President Mutale Nalumango, Chinese Embassy Charge d’Affaires Wang Sheng, and representatives from the Zambia Chinese Association. Wang emphasized China’s empathy towards the flood victims, stating that the support was inspired by shared experiences of similar natural disasters in China. He reaffirmed China’s commitment to providing further humanitarian assistance as needed.

Wang acknowledged the longstanding relationship between Zambia and China, highlighting mutual support over the last 60 years, particularly during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic and cholera outbreaks. This reflects the strategic partnership both nations aspire to maintain. Vice President Nalumango expressed her gratitude for the assistance, recognizing its potential to alleviate the suffering of flood victims, many of whom have been severely impacted.

The floods have resulted in loss of life and widespread displacement across various regions in Zambia, impacting communities primarily in Lusaka. Zhang Jian, president of the Zambia Chinese Association, underscored the ongoing support efforts from Chinese enterprises in Zambia, stating that every donation symbolizes their commitment and compassion for those in need.
