The reigning Teams’ Champions, McLaren, showed promise with Lando Norris leading Free Practice 1 and Piastri securing third position, positioning them as favorites ahead of Sprint Qualifying.

Despite maintaining strong pace in the session, McLaren fell short of securing Sprint pole, with Piastri concluding the session in P3, trailing only behind Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. Reflecting on his performance, Piastri stated that the team’s alternative strategy in SQ3 did not yield the desired results, mentioning, “I think [we were] probably quick at the wrong points, unfortunately.”

He explained that while SQ1 and SQ2 went well, the decision to attempt two laps earlier in SQ3 might not have been ideal. Nevertheless, he remains optimistic about his pace, asserting, “I’m still confident to fight from third tomorrow.” Piastri also acknowledged the difficulties he faced with the McLaren MCL39, noting the improved grip from the new track surface but also its peaky nature, which complicated handling.
