Ukraine and US to Engage in Technical Ceasefire Talks in Saudi Arabia

Ukraine and the United States will hold a technical meeting in Saudi Arabia on March 24 to outline ceasefire parameters. Spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi emphasized the absence of political motives, focusing instead on technical discussions regarding the aspects of a 30-day ceasefire proposal. Russia’s new conditions pose challenges, but Ukraine’s intent to achieve peace is evident.

A technical meeting between Ukrainian and US delegations is scheduled for March 24 in Saudi Arabia. This meeting aims to outline the parameters for potential ceasefire agreements, as articulated by Heorhii Tykhyi, Spokesperson for Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The focus will be on clarifying various ceasefire proposals currently under consideration, rather than engaging in political discussions.

Heorhii Tykhyi emphasized the nature of the gathering, stating, “This is not a political meeting, but a technical one. The meeting will focus on defining the parameters of the proposals for different ceasefire regimes that are currently on the negotiation table. As a state, we have proposed and agreed to a specific American proposal for a 30-day temporary total ceasefire.”

Ukraine’s spokesperson expressed frustration with the Kremlin’s new conditions, including a limited ceasefire agreement concerning energy and critical infrastructure strikes. Tykhyi noted that had Russian President Vladimir Putin accepted the proposal, a ceasefire would have already been established. Demonstrating Ukraine’s commitment to peace, he mentioned, “The negotiations that will take place in Saudi Arabia are bilateral Ukrainian-American talks. We do not know how the Americans will engage with the Russians there; that is their choice.”

Following the initial meeting on March 11, which led to the suggestion of a 30-day ceasefire by the US, conditions set by Russia complicated the situation. President Zelenskyy confirmed that this upcoming meeting would again focus on the technical aspects of the ceasefire negotiations. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that a military component would be part of the discussions, while political involvement from the Minister remains undetermined at this stage.

In conclusion, the upcoming discussions between Ukraine and the United States in Saudi Arabia are designed to establish technical parameters for ceasefire proposals. Despite the challenges posed by Russia’s new conditions, Ukraine remains committed to pursuing peace and is open to dialogue with the US. The outcome of these discussions may significantly impact future ceasefire agreements.
