Ukraine-US Talks in Saudi Arabia to Focus on Ceasefire Parameters
The upcoming Ukraine-US talks in Saudi Arabia will focus on determining the parameters for ceasefire proposals. Described as a technical round by Ukrainian officials, these discussions will clarify the operational details and oversight roles absent high-level political involvement. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha will not attend, while the meeting’s structure suggests a separation between Russian and Ukrainian delegates.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine announced that a forthcoming meeting between Ukrainian and American delegations in Saudi Arabia will aim to establish the parameters for various ceasefire proposals currently under consideration. Heorhii Tykhyi, spokesperson for Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry, emphasized that these discussions are intended as a technical round rather than a political negotiation.
Tykhyi elaborated that the primary focus will be on the specifics and the execution of decisions previously made at the political level. He stated, “Professionals from the Ukrainian and American sides should meet to clarify all the details and how everything should look,” highlighting the need for a clear understanding of operational oversight and monitoring mechanisms.
Moreover, Tykhyi mentioned that Kyiv is uncertain about the nature of communications between the American and Russian delegations in Saudi Arabia, noting, “It’s their choice. But we’re preparing for the talks in Saudi Arabia as a bilateral Ukrainian-American event.” He also confirmed that Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha will not participate, as the meeting does not reach a political level and will contain a military component.
In the backdrop of these developments, Keith Kellogg, noted for his role as US President Donald Trump’s special envoy on Ukraine and Russia, indicated that during the talks, Ukrainian and Russian representatives may be housed in separate rooms, with the US delegation facilitating communication between them. The White House previously announced that these discussions are scheduled to occur on March 23rd in Saudi Arabia.
In conclusion, the upcoming Ukraine-US talks in Saudi Arabia are structured to focus on the technical aspects of ceasefire proposals rather than political negotiations. Ukrainian officials aim to establish clear operational definitions and responsibilities during these discussions, which will not include Ukraine’s Foreign Minister. The format of communication also indicates a careful separation between Ukrainian and Russian representatives, emphasizing the deliberate nature of the meetings in pursuit of a peaceful resolution.
