Ukraine’s Defence Minister to Participate in Saudi Talks with U.S.

Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umierov will attend talks in Saudi Arabia on March 24. President Zelenskyy expressed hope for positive outcomes despite uncertainties about a ceasefire agreement. Following recent ceasefire proposals, Russia’s response indicates potential complications ahead.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that Defence Minister Rustem Umierov will participate in discussions between Ukrainian and United States technical teams in Saudi Arabia on March 24. The president made this declaration during a joint press conference with Czech President Petr Pavel, as reported by Interfax-Ukraine.

During the conference, President Zelenskyy expressed optimism regarding the expertise of the team, stating, “The team will be at a fairly high level, they are technically professional people, the defence minister will also be there as well, and I think we will be ready to be very prompt and very substantive.”

Zelenskyy addressed inquiries concerning the likelihood of reaching agreements in Saudi Arabia, noting that while he could not forecast the outcome, he hoped the talks would yield results that could facilitate a complete ceasefire.

In the context of recent events, Ukraine has conditionally agreed to a 30-day ceasefire based on Russia’s acceptance of the same terms, following talks held in Saudi Arabia on March 11. However, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin has shown caution regarding the ceasefire proposal, indicating that Russia might have its own requirements for any such agreement.

Despite these discussions, the Kremlin asserts compliance with a temporary cessation of hostilities, which they claim applies only to strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Recent attacks on March 20-21 saw 214 Shahed-type drones targeting Ukraine, particularly affecting Odesa and leading to significant emergency power outages in several districts.

In conclusion, Ukraine’s Defence Minister Rustem Umierov is set to engage in high-level discussions with U.S. technical teams in Saudi Arabia, underscoring Ukraine’s proactive diplomatic efforts. Although President Zelenskyy expressed hope for positive outcomes, uncertainties remain regarding a ceasefire agreement, especially in light of recent aggressive actions by Russian forces. The situation continues to evolve as both parties navigate complex negotiations.
