China and Zambia Strengthen Ties with Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement

China and Zambia signed an agreement for economic and technical cooperation, focusing on food security and health initiatives. Key projects include new milling plants and solar water systems, with China reaffirming its commitment to Zambia since their diplomatic ties began in 1964.

On Friday, China and Zambia formalized their economic and technical cooperation agreement, which strengthens their longstanding and beneficial relationship. The agreement was executed by Wang Sheng, Charge d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy, and Zambian Minister of Finance and National Planning Situmbeko Musokotwane, reinforcing their mutual collaboration.

This newly signed agreement sets a framework for future China-aided projects. Wang noted that this development showcases the enduring cooperation between the governments. Priority initiatives, such as constructing three milling plants aimed at enhancing Zambia’s food security, will commence this year, building on the success of three existing plants established by China.

Additionally, Wang announced that a team of experts would soon arrive in Zambia to assess the feasibility of implementing 300 small solar-powered piped water systems, which aim to address water scarcity. Furthermore, a program to supply HIV testing kits and medication is set to be launched to bolster public health services in Zambia.

Wang emphasized China’s commitment to sincerity and good faith in its relations with Africa, stating, “For a long time, China has adhered to an approach that emphasizes sincerity, real results, amity and good faith with Africa.” He reiterated that all commitments made will be honored. Progress on the revitalization negotiations for the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) is also underway, with anticipated major breakthroughs in the near future.

Having established diplomatic relations in 1964, China has consistently supported Zambia in various infrastructure endeavors over the years. Minister Musokotwane expressed gratitude for China’s enduring support, highlighting that the agreement reflects both countries’ dedication to fostering economic progress and technological development.

In conclusion, the agreement between China and Zambia represents a significant step in enhancing their cooperative relationship. The agreement aims to facilitate key projects, including the establishment of milling plants and solar-powered water systems, thus supporting food security and public health in Zambia. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to economic growth and technical advancement, further solidifying their long-standing partnership.
