China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi has urged Japan and South Korea to bolster trade ties and regional cooperation amidst global instability. During meetings in Tokyo, the ministers acknowledged the need for enhanced communication to foster economic integration and ensure stability in the region, especially regarding North Korea. A summit later this year was proposed, along with discussions on a free-trade agreement that resumed after a pause.

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called for enhanced trade relations among China, Japan, and South Korea to navigate global challenges. During a recent meeting in Tokyo with his Japanese and South Korean counterparts, Wang emphasized the importance of free trade and regional cooperation amid ongoing global “chaos.” He stated that strengthening communication and trust among the three nations is vital for economic integration and regional stability.

Wang expressed that, considering the intertwined international situation and the sluggish recovery of the world economy, it is essential for the three countries to enhance mutual trust and increase cooperation. This would contribute positively to peace and development in the region by reinforcing multilateralism and promoting inclusive economic globalization.

The discussions involved Wang, Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya, and South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul focusing on trade and security. Iwaya remarked that the international environment is increasingly severe and emphasized the necessity of dialogue and cooperation to overcome divisions and conflicts.

Additionally, the ministers agreed to expedite the preparations for a summit involving Chinese Premier Li Qiang and his Japanese and South Korean counterparts. They also decided to continue discussions on a free-trade agreement that had been rekindled after previously stagnating since 2019.

Regarding North Korea, Wang expressed China’s readiness to collaborate with all parties for a political resolution. He highlighted the complexities and instabilities affecting the Korean peninsula, urging stakeholders to acknowledge root causes and strive for positive interactions. Cho reaffirmed the shared responsibility among the three nations to maintain peace and stability in the region, cautioning against rewarding North Korea for its actions related to the Ukraine conflict.
