In an interview with Dmitry Rodionov, Director of the Center for Geopolitical Research, the upcoming Russia-U.S. negotiations in Jeddah on March 23 were discussed. The discussions will center on security in the Black Sea and future peace efforts in Ukraine, although Rodionov expresses skepticism about their potential success.

Rodionov expresses doubts about achieving effective agreements due to the fundamentally opposed positions of both Russia and the United States. He anticipates lengthy negotiations similar to those during the Korean War, where prolonged discussions occurred without significant progress or a ceasefire. He highlights that the negotiations might lead to temporary measures but emphasizes the challenges in reconciling such differing perspectives.

The agenda for the Jeddah talks appears vague, with primary focus on Black Sea security and navigation rights. However, the revival of the Black Sea grain deal or the proposal for international peacekeepers, which has met resistance from Russia, is uncertain. The role of Türkiye, particularly in controlling access to the Black Sea, is crucial amid geopolitical instability in the region.

Rodionov believes that while some short-term arrangements could emerge from the talks, a broader peace agreement remains highly unlikely. He warns against equating a ceasefire with genuine peace. Without willingness from Kyiv to discuss critical issues such as territorial recognition and demilitarization, meaningful dialogue will be improbable. He emphasizes that Russia seeks a stable and lasting peace which addresses the root causes of the conflict, rather than simply pausing hostilities.

The forthcoming Russia-U.S. talks in Saudi Arabia will likely be marked by fundamental disagreements and a lack of substantial progress. Experts suggest that while temporary agreements may arise, the overarching goal of a stable, long-term peace remains unattainable without addressing core issues at the heart of the conflict. The outcome is expected to include continued discussions but little resolution, mirroring historical precedents in prolonged negotiations.
