Following his release, Mr. Glezmann boarded a Qatari aircraft in Kabul to fly to Doha, Qatar, accompanied by U.S. and Qatari officials. Qatar has maintained close relations with the Taliban government and has facilitated negotiations between the Taliban and U.S. representatives. Notably, discussions regarding a U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan were also held in Doha during the Trump administration.
Mr. Rubio expressed gratitude to the Qatari government for its assistance in securing Mr. Glezmann’s release. Adam Boehler, former special envoy for hostage affairs under President Trump, participated in the negotiations with the Taliban. This meeting in Kabul marks a significant milestone, being the first known in-person engagement between U.S. and Taliban officials since the Trump administration began.
Accompanying Mr. Boehler were Zalmay Khalilzad, who served as the special envoy for Afghanistan reconciliation during the Trump presidency. Photographs of the meeting depicted Mr. Boehler casually dressed, while Mr. Khalilzad wore formal attire. They engaged in talks with Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Afghan foreign minister, and other officials.
