World Cup 2026 Qualifying: Mali Revives Campaign as Cape Verde Leads Group
Mali revived their World Cup campaign with a 3-0 win over Comoros, while Cape Verde took the lead in Group D with a narrow victory over Mauritius. Benin remains on top of Group C despite a draw against Zimbabwe. Meanwhile, Uganda faced challenges with a loss to Mozambique, and Libya settled for a draw against Angola. Other notable matches included a dramatic 3-3 draw between Kenya and The Gambia, and Sierra Leone’s win over Guinea-Bissau.
The fifth round of the African qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup saw Mali rejuvenate their campaign with a 3-0 victory over Comoros, thanks to two goals from Kamory Doumbia. After a disappointing start that resulted in the dismissal of coach Eric Chelle, Mali stands just two points behind Group I leaders Madagascar and one point behind Ghana and Comoros, under the guidance of new coach Tom Saintfiet.
In Group C, Benin retained their top position despite drawing 2-2 with Zimbabwe, while Nigeria, who are trailing by five points, aims to recover with a match against Rwanda. Mozambique secured a 3-1 win over 10-man Uganda, advancing three points ahead of Algeria but could see their lead challenged depending on Algeria’s performance against Botswana.
Gabon achieved a comfortable 3-0 win over Seychelles in Group F, with Denis Bouanga scoring twice, positioning the Panthers two points ahead of Ivory Coast before their encounter with Burundi. Cape Verde’s narrow 1-0 victory over Mauritius allowed them to capitalize on Cameroon’s dropped points, placing them one point above the Indomitable Lions in Group D.
In other matches, Libya, under coach Aliou Cisse, faced a setback as they could only draw 1-1 with Angola, surrendering a late equalizer. Meanwhile, Kenya held The Gambia to a 3-3 draw, with both teams still facing challenges for qualifying. Sierra Leone managed to triumph over Guinea-Bissau, moving to second in Group A behind Egypt.
The latest stage of the World Cup 2026 qualifying has witnessed pivotal matches, with teams like Mali, Cape Verde, and Mozambique making significant strides. Benin and Gabon have also shown strong performances, while traditional powerhouses like Uganda and Libya face challenges in their campaigns. As the preliminary rounds progress, several teams are vying for the nine spots allotted to Africa in the tournament.
