He expressed a commitment to economic globalisation during the China Development Forum, despite the ongoing fragmentation in global trade due to the administration’s policies. During the forum, attended by notable figures such as Apple CEO Tim Cook, Li commented on the need for fairness and justice in these turbulent times, asserting, “China will firmly stand on the correct side of history… amid the rough waters of the times.” He called for genuine multilateralism and emphasized the significance of stability in the global economic landscape amidst the increasing risks of fragmentation.

In addition to economic discussions, the dialogue is expected to address the issue of fentanyl and its precursor chemicals entering the United States from China. While President Trump attributes his tariffs to China’s inability to control the drug trade, Chinese officials maintain that they have taken substantial measures against illegal drug production. Senator Daines also engaged with Vice Premier He Lifeng, who is a key economic advisor to President Xi Jinping, emphasizing China’s readiness for constructive dialogue and cooperation.

China aims for a growth target of around five percent this year, maintaining the same goal as the previous year which many economists deem ambitious given ongoing uncertainties in the global trading system.
