A Chinese professor’s specific girlfriend criteria have prompted a police investigation due to public outrage. Lou, 35, has described himself as tall, wealthy, and seeking a younger, well-educated partner from elite institutions. This has drawn criticism and comparisons to historic practices of selecting concubines.

An associate professor from Zhejiang University in China has come under scrutiny for listing specific criteria for a girlfriend, which some have described as reminiscent of “selecting an imperial concubine”. Lou, the professor, shared his requirements in a blind date online chat room, sparking considerable public discussion since early March, according to Chao News.

Lou identified himself as a 35-year-old male, standing at 175cm tall and weighing 70kg, with a PhD from a prestigious institution and an annual income exceeding one million yuan (approximately US$140,000). His interests include sports and financial investments, and he stated he is an only child from a financially stable family in Yiwu, Zhejiang.

In his posting, Lou expressed a desire for a girlfriend born after 2000—approximately ten years his junior. He specified that she should be between 165 to 171cm in height, “slim, and have a good image.” Furthermore, he required her to possess at least a bachelor’s degree, with a preference for those who have graduated from a select group of elite Chinese universities, including master’s and PhD holders.

The incident highlights societal expectations and perceptions surrounding dating criteria, sparking debate on gender roles and the influence of personal standards in relationships. As the scrutiny continues, the incident urges a broader conversation on how educational and socioeconomic factors shape personal relationships in contemporary society.
