Egypt’s Foreign Affairs Minister Badr Abdelatty met EU’s Kaja Kallas in Cairo to discuss bilateral ties, regional stability, and cooperation on several issues including Gaza reconstruction and Syrian political processes.
On Sunday, Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, Badr Abdelatty, engaged in political consultations with Kaja Kallas, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, in Cairo. Their discussions were centered on enhancing bilateral relations and addressing regional and international developments of shared interest.
Abdelatty commended the ongoing communication and coordination with the EU on numerous issues. Ambassador Tamim Khallaf, the Ministry’s official spokesperson, reported that Abdelatty welcomed the advancements in Egypt-EU relations and expressed a desire to continue fostering cooperation across the six pillars of their strategic partnership, emphasizing the importance of the economic dimension, particularly the approval of the second tranche of the 4 billion euro European financial package.
Highlighting the significant challenges Egypt faces in hosting millions of refugees and migrants, Abdelatty acknowledged the ongoing collaboration with the EU in counter-terrorism efforts, noting Egypt’s joint presidency of the Global Counter-Terrorism Forum with the EU.
The talks also addressed the situation in Gaza, where Abdelatty stressed the need to strengthen the ceasefire agreement amidst ongoing Israeli escalations. He appreciated the EU’s backing for the Arab reconstruction plan for Gaza and urged participation in its implementation and the forthcoming reconstruction conference hosted by Egypt.
The discussion extended to Syria, with Abdelatty voicing support for the Syrian people’s ambitions and underscoring the necessity of a comprehensive political process inclusive of all societal components to attain security and stability.
Regarding recent southern Lebanon developments, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to supporting the Lebanese state and stressed adherence to the ceasefire agreement. He called for the immediate withdrawal of Israeli forces, allowing the Lebanese army to execute Resolution 1701 effectively.
The dialogue also encompassed viewpoints on the Horn of Africa, Red Sea security, and concerns surrounding Egyptian water security.
The recent talks between Egypt and the EU signify a commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and addressing pivotal regional issues. Emphasis on economic cooperation, the urgent situations in Gaza and Syria, and stability in Lebanon highlight the shared priorities of both entities. Continued dialogue and action will be crucial in advancing mutual interests and ensuring regional stability.
