Liam Lawson Faces Challenges in Chinese GP Amid High Expectations

Liam Lawson struggled during the Chinese Grand Prix, failing to secure points as he finished 15th, later promoted to 12th due to disqualifications. After trying a new car setup, Lawson expressed disappointment in the lack of improvement compared to the Sprint race. He acknowledges the pressure of performing at Red Bull, aiming to enhance his performance in future races.

Liam Lawson faced a difficult race at the Chinese Grand Prix, finishing without any significant advancement into the points. During qualification for both the Sprint and Grand Prix, he secured a 20th place position. While he improved to 14th in the Sprint race, expectations were higher for the main event, where he started in a lowly position following a change in car setup by Red Bull.

Prior to the Grand Prix, Red Bull modified Lawson’s car setup under Parc Ferme conditions, leading him to start from the pit lane in hopes of better performance. Unfortunately, while other drivers such as Esteban Ocon and Ollie Bearman capitalized on unexpected tire longevity, Lawson struggled to find his rhythm, ultimately finishing in 15th place but later moving to 12th due to disqualifications of Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, and Pierre Gasly.

Reflecting on the lack of progress during the Grand Prix, Lawson noted, “To be honest, we were even more competitive in yesterday’s Sprint. We were able to overtake cars and move forward. It’s just we tried something with the set-up to learn something today. It was quite a big step and unfortunately it just didn’t work.” He acknowledged the tough learning curve, stating, “A lot to learn from this weekend – a lot for me personally to get on top of as well. It’s just been extremely tough.”

Following his promotion from Racing Bulls to Red Bull, Lawson has felt pressure, especially while teammate Max Verstappen finished fourth in China. He is aware of the comparisons with rookie drivers, as he aims to score points for Red Bull’s pursuit of the Teams’ Championship. Lawson expressed, “I’d love to say I just need more time driving the car but obviously we don’t really have that. Fortunately we go to a track that I know [next] and it’s a track that I like. I’ll be spending this week going very heavily into absolutely everything to try and obviously do a better job.”

Liam Lawson’s experience at the Chinese Grand Prix highlighted the challenges of adapting to a new environment while under significant pressure. Despite his efforts and growth during the Sprint, the modified setup for the Grand Prix did not yield the desired results. With heightened expectations as a Red Bull driver, Lawson remains committed to improving and looks forward to upcoming races.
