Frenky, a retired military K-9, has been reunited with his handler, Army Staff Sgt. Kristin Vanderzanden, after three years apart. Frenky, a 10-year-old German shepherd, has been reunited with his handler, Army Staff Sgt. Kristin Vanderzanden, by the American Humane Society (AHS) following a three-year separation. The reunification occurred in San Antonio, facilitated by the AHS Military Working Dog (MWD) Reunification program. Frenky served alongside Vanderzanden from 2017 until his retirement in January 2021, marking their bond from her first K-9 experience.
Staff Sgt. Vanderzanden, who is also a drill sergeant for the Army’s MWD program, spent nearly 4½ years with Frenky, undertaking extensive responsibilities, including a nine-month tour in Afghanistan and a ten-month stint in Iraq. The K-9 showcased remarkable composure amid dangerous conditions, significantly impacting his unit’s operations, and earned a reputation for his pleasant demeanor on base.
During their deployment, the bond between Vanderzanden and Frenky grew deeply; he often preferred to sleep in her room rather than in his kennel. Together, they also participated in 20 Secret Service missions, providing security for the president, first lady, and foreign leaders. In 2021, Vanderzanden was relocated to Fort Drum, New York, leaving Frenky in Louisiana—a separation she found heartbreaking.
Vanderzanden expressed her eagerness to reunite with Frenky amid concerns for his health as he approached retirement. Although he had three handlers over his service, his connection with Vanderzanden was particularly profound. The AHS program covered Frenky’s transportation to San Antonio and will also pay for his veterinary care throughout his life.
Vanderzanden expressed her excitement about giving Frenky a comfortable home life, where he can enjoy leisure activities such as relaxing on the couch.
