Russia Aims for Progress in Saudi Talks on Ukraine Conflict
Russia seeks progress in Saudi talks concerning the Ukraine war, as violence persists. While a ceasefire proposal was rejected, conflicting aerial strikes continue from both parties. The choice of negotiators raises skepticism, and differing US views on Putin’s role complicate negotiations.
Recent talks in Saudi Arabia regarding the Ukraine conflict involve Russia expressing hope for “some progress.” A Russian negotiator remarked on prior rejections of a US-Ukraine ceasefire proposal, advocating instead for a cessation of aerial attacks on energy targets. Despite such proposals, both parties have continued strikes ahead of the negotiations.
Notably, a Russian strike on Zaporizhzhia resulted in the tragic deaths of a family of three, prompting condemnation from Ukrainian officials. On the same note, drone attacks on Kyiv resulted in casualties and infrastructure damage. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported injuries and falling debris caused by what he termed a “massive attack by enemy UAVs.”
US negotiators will engage with both Ukrainian and Russian delegations individually, a tactic referred to as “shuttle diplomacy” by US envoy Keith Kellogg. However, a significant agreement remains elusive despite the ongoing diplomatic efforts. Russian senator Grigory Karasin, who will lead the Russian team, expressed desires for progress in an unspecified area during the talks.
Questions have emerged surrounding Russia’s choice of negotiators, notably Karasin and Sergey Beseda, who lack roles in traditional diplomatic structures. Ukrainian officials, in response, have cited continuous attacks as evidence that Russia is not genuinely pursuing peace, despite Russian President Vladimir Putin’s claims of ordered restraint on energy targets.
In contrast, US envoy Steve Witkoff recently described Putin as a “great” leader during discussions, portraying a more favorable view. The context of ongoing military actions included a barrage of drone strikes by Russia, resulting in civilian casualties, including the death of a child in Zaporizhzhia. Simultaneously, Ukraine conducted retaliatory drone attacks on Russian territories, maintaining the cycle of hostilities amidst the fragile diplomatic efforts.
In summary, the ongoing negotiations in Saudi Arabia represent a pivotal moment in the Ukraine conflict, with both Russia and Ukraine maintaining firm positions while retaliation continues. While Russia anticipates achieving progress, the grim effects of military actions persist, raising doubts about the sincerity of peace prospects. The negotiations reveal a complex interplay of military strategy and diplomatic maneuvering that underscores the conflict’s challenges.
