Strengthening Legislative Cooperation Between China and Zimbabwe

Cheng Yan of the Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe met with Webster Shamu, Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Zimbabwe’s Parliament, to discuss enhancing legislative exchanges and cooperation. Both highlighted the significance of their countries’ diplomatic relations, marking the upcoming 45th anniversary, and committed to fostering bilateral ties further.

On March 12, Cheng Yan, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe, met with Webster Shamu, the Chairperson of the Zimbabwean Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee. The discussion centered around enhancing exchanges and cooperation between the legislative bodies of China and Zimbabwe. Counsellor Zhang Yi was also present during this significant meeting.

During the meeting, Cheng Yan provided an overview of the recent sessions of China’s National People’s Congress (NPC) and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. He emphasized the concept of whole-process people’s democracy in China. Cheng noted that 2025 will mark the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Zimbabwe, expressing a desire for further legislative exchanges to implement agreements made by both heads of state and to advance outcomes from the Beijing summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

Webster Shamu commended the mutual trust and enduring friendship between Zimbabwe and China. He assured Cheng Yan that the Parliament of Zimbabwe is eager to maintain strong ties with the NPC and facilitate exchanges, thus playing an active role in fostering cooperation across various sectors between the two nations.

Overall, this meeting underscores the commitment of both nations’ legislative bodies towards enhancing bilateral relations and fostering cooperation, which is fundamental to the deepening friendship between the peoples of China and Zimbabwe.
