Sudan has filed a complaint with FIFA against Senegal for allegedly fielding an ineligible player, Assane Diao, during their World Cup Qualifying match. Diao, a 19-year-old forward, last played for Spain in November 2023, and FIFA rules require a three-year waiting period before switching countries.

The Sudanese Football Association has lodged a formal complaint with FIFA against Senegal, alleging that the team fielded an ineligible player, Assane Diao, in their recent World Cup Qualifying match. The complaint highlights a breach of FIFA regulations, which mandate that a player must wait three years after their last international appearance before switching allegiance to a different Member Association.

In the contentious match, which resulted in a 0-0 draw, Diao was substituted in during the 79th minute to replace Ismaila Sarr. The 19-year-old forward currently plays for Como in Italy, but he last represented Spain in a Euro Under 21 Qualifying fixture against Belgium on 21 November 2023. In total, Diao has participated in four official matches under Spanish coach Santi Denia, finishing with two wins and two draws.

The case surrounding Assane Diao’s eligibility to play for Senegal raises critical questions about adherence to FIFA regulations concerning player transfers between Member Associations.
