Ukrainian and U.S. officials are scheduled to convene in Saudi Arabia on Sunday to discuss a potential partial ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, a part of U.S. President Donald Trump’s increased diplomatic efforts to conclude the ongoing conflict. This meeting will take place prior to the anticipated discussions involving U.S. and Russian delegations on Monday.

This assembly follows previous negotiations held in Saudi Arabia, first between the U.S. and Russia, and subsequently with Ukraine, where Kyiv acknowledged a proposal for a 30-day truce. The Ukrainian delegation will be led by Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, and President Volodymyr Zelenskiy indicated that this leadership will facilitate immediate and substantial action from Kyiv.

Nevertheless, Ukrainian officials perceive Sunday’s discussions in Riyadh as fundamentally technical. Heorhii Tykhyi, spokesperson for the foreign ministry, stated that the intent of the meeting is to clarify the details concerning different ceasefire modalities and their monitoring mechanisms.

Last week, President Vladimir Putin consented to Trump’s initiative for a cessation of attacks on energy infrastructure for a month, directing the Russian military to comply. However, this arrangement did not extend to a comprehensive truce within the war, which the U.S. and Kyiv had anticipated.

On Saturday, Trump remarked that efforts to curb the escalation of the Ukraine-Russia conflict seemed to be “somewhat under control.” The U.S. aims to finalize a broader ceasefire agreement within weeks, with aspirations for a truce by April 20, as reported by Bloomberg News.

The Russian and U.S. experts are expected to address shipping safety in the Black Sea during their Monday meeting. Despite the flurry of diplomatic measures, both Russia and Ukraine have reported continued military operations, with Russian forces making incremental advances in eastern regions claimed by Moscow.

In a recent offensive, a substantial Russian drone strike on Kyiv resulted in the deaths of at least three individuals, including a child, and caused extensive damage to high-rise apartments. Simultaneously, Russian sources reported downing 59 Ukrainian drones in their southwestern territories, resulting in fatalities as well.

The ongoing diplomatic discussions in Saudi Arabia represent a significant step towards negotiating a ceasefire in the Ukraine-Russia conflict. Although these meetings are primarily technical, they underscore the urgency and commitment of both U.S. and Ukrainian officials to achieve a peaceful resolution.
