Chad Issues Warning to Sudan Following Military Threats
Chad has warned Sudan of its intent to retaliate if attacked, following threats from Sudanese military officials. Chadian representatives express concern over potential escalation of hostilities, citing historical tensions and destabilizing actions attributed to Sudan. The ongoing conflict in Sudan has led to severe humanitarian crises, impacting millions, particularly in Chad.
Chad has issued a warning to Sudan, asserting its right to respond if attacked following threats from Sudan’s military leadership. Deputy commander Yasser Al-Atta stated in a video that airports in N’Djamena and Amdjarras are legitimate military targets, prompting reactions from Chadian officials who consider these statements as potential declarations of war.
Chadian foreign ministry spokesman Ibrahim Adam Mahamat cautioned that such rhetoric could escalate tensions within the region, emphasizing that Chad reserves the right to defend itself vigorously. Former Chadian Prime Minister Saleh Kebzabo echoed these concerns, urging the population to prepare for possible military mobilization.
For over sixty years, Chad has accused Sudan of destabilizing its government through orchestrating rebellions and supporting extremist groups. The current conflict in Sudan involves a power struggle between General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and his former deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, leading to significant unrest and humanitarian crises.
N’Djamena has denied allegations of involvement in the Sudan internal conflict, despite accusations from Khartoum regarding arms support to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. Reports, including a United Nations account from January 2024, have brought attention to these allegations, which Chad has persistently refuted.
The presence of a Zaghawa rebellion in Sudan’s Darfur region, which shares ethnic ties with a group in Chad, remains a significant concern. This rebellion is led by Ousman Dillo, related to a prominent Chadian opposition leader. Past conflicts have seen the Zaghawa forces launching attacks from Sudan, which have historically posed threats to Chadian stability.
Since the outbreak of conflict in Sudan in April 2023, there have been tens of thousands of casualties and over 11 million individuals displaced. The situation has escalated into a severe humanitarian crisis, with approximately two million people fleeing to neighboring countries, including 1.5 million seeking refuge in Chad.
The escalating tensions between Chad and Sudan, primarily fueled by military threats and historical grievances, may lead to a significant conflict unless resolved. Chad’s articulated readiness to retaliate against perceived aggression underscores the volatility of the regional situation. Additionally, the humanitarian ramifications of the ongoing Sudan conflict continue to rise, necessitating urgent international attention and intervention.
