China Denies Asylum Request from Ex-President Duterte
China has denied any asylum request from former President Rodrigo Duterte and his family, stating that his recent visit to Hong Kong was a personal holiday. This denial follows the issuance of an arrest warrant against Duterte by the International Criminal Court, leading to his detention upon his return to the Philippines.
On Monday, China disputed allegations regarding an asylum request from former President Rodrigo Duterte and his family. According to reports from 24 Oras, the Chinese government clarified that Duterte’s recent trip to Hong Kong was for personal reasons. Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, stated, “Mr. Duterte’s visit to Hong Kong is a private holiday. China has never received an application from the so-called former President Duterte and his family to seek asylum from the Chinese government.”
Duterte traveled to Hong Kong on March 7, primarily to participate in an event organized for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). Coincidentally, this was the same day that the Pre-Trial Chamber I of the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for him. Upon returning from Hong Kong, Duterte was apprehended on March 11 at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
In conclusion, China has firmly denied that it received an asylum request from former President Duterte and his family, emphasizing the personal nature of Duterte’s visit to Hong Kong. This clarification comes in the context of an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court on the same day of his visit, culminating in his arrest upon returning to the Philippines.
