David Popovici has been honored as Romania’s Male Athlete of the Year for 2024, following an exceptional year that included winning Olympic gold and bronze medals at the Paris 2024 Games. At just 21 years old, the Bucharest native made history by becoming the first male swimmer from Romania to secure an Olympic gold medal in the Men’s 200m Freestyle, narrowly defeating Great Britain’s Matthew Richards. Additionally, he earned a bronze medal in the Men’s 100m Freestyle event, a race claimed by China’s Pan Zhanle, who set a world record.
Popovici was celebrated for his achievements at the 2024 Romanian Sports Gala, organized by the National Sports Agency at the Romanian National Opera, where he was recognized alongside Olympic rowing champion Simona Radiș. The event also honored Popovici’s coach, Adrian Radulescu, as Male Coach of the Year, while Camelia Potec received the President of the Year award for her contributions as the President of the Romanian Aquatics and Modern Pentathlon Federation.
During the awards ceremony, Popovici expressed his gratitude, stating, “I am happy for this award, I am happy for my entire team, I am happy that our effort is recognised.” He acknowledged the challenges faced in preparing for the Olympic Games, emphasizing the value of determination and resilience. Popovici further reflected, “Winning is great, but every time I lose, I learn a lot,” highlighting his commitment to inspiring youth involvement in sports and swimming.
In addition to Popovici, Romanian aquatics featured contenders such as high diver Constantin Popovici for Male Athlete of the Year and junior swimmer Robert Badea listed for the Male Sports Hopes award.
