Dewan Rakyat Speaker Attends Iftar Hosted by Cambodian Prime Minister
On March 24, Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul attended an iftar event in Phnom Penh, hosted by Prime Minister Hun Manet, which attracted 6,200 guests. Johari praised Cambodia’s commitment to religious harmony and highlighted Malaysia’s significant investments in the nation, reinforcing the bilateral relations since 1957.
On March 24, in Phnom Penh, Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, Tan Sri Johari Abdul, participated in an iftar gathering with the local Muslim community, hosted by Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Hun Manet. As per the statement from the Office of the Speaker, the event welcomed approximately 6,200 guests from various regions of Asia, including university students, local Muslims, international representatives, imams, and NGO members.
During his address, Johari praised the Cambodian Prime Minister’s dedication to promoting ethnic and religious harmony within the nation. “The principle of tolerance practised here serves as an example for other countries in fostering peace and shared prosperity,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of interfaith relations in Cambodia.
In his remarks, Johari acknowledged the Cambodian government’s initiatives to protect the Muslim community’s interests, particularly in reinforcing interfaith harmony. He stated, “This commitment serves as an excellent example of how diverse religious and cultural communities can live together in peace and mutual respect.”
Since 1957, Malaysia and Cambodia have enhanced their bilateral relations encompassing trade, education, and culture. Today, Cambodia stands as a crucial partner for Malaysia, bolstered through strong cooperation in ASEAN and international forums, and is a significant focus for Malaysian investments, which have reached US$3.2 billion (RM14.18 billion) as of December 2023.
Furthermore, Malaysia ranks as the third-largest foreign investor in Cambodia, following China and South Korea, directing investments into construction, telecommunications, banking, and hospitality sectors.
The iftar event in Phnom Penh exemplifies the ongoing cooperative relations between Malaysia and Cambodia, highlighting the commitment to religious harmony and the protection of minority interests. Speaker Johari’s commendation of Cambodia’s policies underscores the importance of mutual respect among diverse communities. The strengthening of bilateral relations in investment and culture further enriches the partnership between the two countries.
