U.S. and Russia Conduct Talks in Saudi Arabia to Address Ukraine Ceasefire
U.S. and Russian officials have initiated talks in Saudi Arabia targeting a ceasefire in Ukraine, specifically aiming for a Black Sea maritime agreement first. Current discussions follow earlier negotiations with Ukraine, as President Trump seeks to resolve the ongoing conflict. Key representatives from both nations are involved in these discussions, with an emphasis on verification and peacekeeping measures.
Officials from the United States and Russia commenced discussions in Saudi Arabia aimed at establishing a broad ceasefire in Ukraine. A particular focus is to implement a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea prior to reaching an extensive agreement. These negotiations were prompted by previous talks involving U.S. officials and Ukraine in Saudi Arabia, as President Donald Trump continues efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict.
Leading the U.S. delegation are Andrew Peek from the National Security Council and Michael Anton from the State Department. On the Russian side, Grigory Karasin, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the upper house of parliament, and Sergei Beseda, an adviser to the Federal Security Service director, will represent their interests.
White House national security adviser Mike Waltz noted during an interview that representatives from the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine are sharing the same venue in Riyadh, allowing for direct discussions. In addition to the Black Sea ceasefire, the agenda includes addressing the line of control between the two countries, emphasizing verification measures, peacekeeping, and potentially freezing current lines of conflict.
Rustem Umerov, the Ukrainian defence minister and head of the Ukrainian delegation, indicated via social media that discussions included proposals aimed at safeguarding energy facilities and critical infrastructure from further hostilities.
