USA Initiates New Ceasefire Talks with Russia in Saudi Arabia
The USA has begun new negotiations with Russia for a limited ceasefire in Saudi Arabia, following talks with Ukraine. Key discussions involve halting attacks on energy infrastructure and seeking a pathway to peace. The Ukrainian delegation, led by Defense Minister Rustem Umjerov, aims for an “honorable and lasting peace.” However, challenges persist as Russia remains hesitant toward a thorough ceasefire, citing security concerns.
The United States has initiated a new series of talks with Russia regarding a limited ceasefire in Saudi Arabia, following a meeting with Ukrainian representatives. The discussions are intended to explore potential peace solutions for Ukraine through shuttle diplomacy. According to the “New York Times,” future negotiations with Ukraine may depend on the results of these talks, which involve separate discussions between US mediators, Moscow, and Kiev representatives.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umjerov regarded the initial negotiations as constructive, highlighting discussions concerning the energy sector. The Ukrainian delegation, empowered by President Volodymyr Zelensky, aims to secure an “honorable and lasting peace” for both Ukraine and Europe. During the talks, participants will focus on a ceasefire, prioritizing a halt to attacks on energy facilities while ensuring other critical infrastructures are also protected.
The negotiations are primarily centered around technical matters related to infrastructure protection. Umjerov indicated that the Ukrainian delegation is tasked with addressing complex technical issues with involvement from energy and military experts. The discussions also encompass Russian initiatives concerning safe maritime operations in the Black Sea.
Ukrainian President Zelensky underscored the importance of pressuring Moscow to cease its attacks and insisted that those responsible for the conflict must take accountability. He expressed optimism regarding the ongoing discussions while emphasizing that Russia must order a halt to its aggression.
Russia’s representation in Riyadh includes prominent figures such as Georgi Karassin and Sergei Besseda. Meanwhile, the US delegation comprises several teams, including special envoy Keith Kellogg and security adviser Mike Waltz. President Donald Trump has expressed his desire for a swift resolution to the conflict, while acknowledging the obstacles posed by the Kremlin, which suggests that it remains apprehensive about achieving an immediate ceasefire. Recent drone attacks in Kiev underline the ongoing tensions, with significant casualties resulting from the violence.
The initiation of talks in Saudi Arabia represents a critical step towards seeking a resolution to the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. As the United States leads negotiations focused on establishing a ceasefire and safeguarding infrastructure, the coming days will reveal whether these discussions yield constructive outcomes. Both sides have considerable concerns, yet achieving peace remains a central objective for Ukraine and its allies, despite Russia’s reluctance to fully engage in cessation efforts.
