Chad Issues Warning to Sudan Amid Escalating Tensions and Conflicts

Chad has warned Sudan of potential retaliation following threats from Sudanese military officials regarding attacks on its airports. Chadian leaders assert that such statements risk escalating conflict in the region. Chad has a historical context of rivalry with Sudan, accusing it of destabilization efforts, particularly through support of rebel groups. The ongoing Sudan conflict has created a severe humanitarian crisis affecting Chad and surrounding nations.

Chad has issued a warning to Sudan, affirming its right to retaliate if attacked. This statement follows threats from Yasser Al-Atta, deputy commander of Sudanese forces, who declared that airports in N’Djamena and Amdjarras are legitimate military targets. Chadian foreign ministry spokesman Ibrahim Adam Mahamat indicated that such threats could escalate tensions regionally.

Former Chadian Prime Minister Saleh Kebzabo labeled Al-Atta’s comments as a declaration of war, urging the nation to take military preparations seriously. Chad has a longstanding grievance against Sudan, accusing it for over sixty years of attempting to destabilize the country through support of rebellions and groups like Boko Haram.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in conflict between General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and his former deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, leader of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. Despite Chad’s denial of involvement in the Sudanese conflict, accusations have arisen concerning its support of the RSF, highlighted in a UN report earlier this year.

The Zaghawa rebellion in Sudan, particularly concerning Ousman Dillo, raises alarm for N’Djamena, as this ethnic group has ties to Chad. In 2008, a similar rebellion prompted significant military action from Chad during which former President Idriss Deby Itno survived a close encounter with rebel forces. The ongoing war in Sudan has resulted in severe humanitarian crises, with tens of thousands deceased and millions displaced, including a substantial influx into Chad.

Chad’s firm warning to Sudan underscores the rising tensions between the two nations, exacerbated by ongoing conflicts in Sudan that threaten regional stability. The historical grievances and recent provocations highlight a precarious situation, necessitating vigilance and potential military readiness from Chad. The humanitarian crisis stemming from the Sudanese conflict continues to deepen, further complicating regional dynamics.
