He stated that during the conflict, leaders of the Awami League sought refuge in India while Major Ziaur Rahman declared independence and provided essential guidance to the nation. Ziaur Rahman later became the president and founded the BNP, with his wife, Begum Khaleda Zia, recognized as the first female freedom fighter after enduring nine months of imprisonment by the Pakistani army.

Mirza Fakhrul underscored that those unfamiliar with history often question Ziaur Rahman’s significant contributions. He criticized the Awami League for not believing in democracy, highlighting the Baksal incident from 1972 to 1975 as evidence of their repeated undermining of democratic principles. “We cannot think of giving any more democratic benefits to the Awami League,” he asserted.
