In recent testimony before the House Intelligence Committee, FBI Director Kash Patel indicated that U.S. adversaries, particularly China and Russia, are increasingly focusing on the northern border with Canada as a potential vulnerability. He noted that the effective measures taken to address the crisis at the southern border have prompted these adversaries to redirect their resources and strategies towards infiltrating the northern border. “The enemy adapts,” Patel stated, underscoring the need for continued vigilance.
Patel acknowledged that while adversaries have not completely abandoned the southern border, the robust security efforts, initiated since President Donald Trump’s administration, have made it significantly more challenging to smuggle people and drugs such as fentanyl into the United States. The southern border has witnessed a notable decrease, with reported encounters by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) dropping by 90% in various sectors over the past year., aided by the deployment of thousands of U.S. military personnel supporting CBP operations in a variety of capacities including barrier reinforcement and surveillance.
During Biden’s administration, the U.S. experienced unprecedented illegal crossings, particularly among migrants from regions beyond North and Latin America. Notably, 2023 saw over 24,000 illegal attempts from Chinese nationals—a staggering increase of over 5,200% compared to the previous year’s total of 450 encounters, according to CBP data. Patel reported that from 2022 to 2025, approximately 178,000 Chinese nationals attempted to cross the southern border.
Patel expressed concern that the enhanced security at the southern border might inadvertently expose the northern border to new threats. He argued that adversaries such as China and Russia may replicate tactics used in less secure areas, suggesting a shift in the nature of border vulnerabilities. The FBI had not provided additional comments following Patel’s statements to Fox News Digital.
