New Delhi has yet to officially respond to the request made by Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yunus, for a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi before his upcoming trip to China. According to reports, Yunus expressed a desire to meet with Modi in December, prior to his anticipated visit to China scheduled for this Wednesday. However, Shafiqul Alam, the Press Secretary for Yunus, lamented, “Unfortunately, we didn’t receive a positive response,” as shared with The Hindu.

Yunus’s anticipated trip to China is viewed positively by Dhaka, which aims to attract investment and signal its openness to Chinese entrepreneurs looking to establish factories in Bangladesh. Meanwhile, Bangladesh has reiterated its request for a meeting between Yunus and Modi, especially with the BIMSTEC Summit approaching next month, where External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has stated that Modi’s attendance is under consideration, though details remain uncertain.

Foreign Secretary Md Jasim Uddin highlighted Bangladesh’s eagerness for the meeting, asserting that “Bangladesh is prepared for a meeting between Dr. Muhammad Yunus and Narendra Modi” and is patiently waiting for India’s affirmative response. He expressed hopes that such a meeting would alleviate the current tensions in bilateral relations, stating, “We are considering this meeting quite seriously given the situation.”

In a recent interview with BBC Bangla, Yunus emphasized the importance of maintaining amicable relations between Bangladesh and India, despite some existing discord influenced by propaganda. He remarked, “There has been no deterioration, our relations will always be good. They are good now and they will be good in future,” affirming the necessity of positive ties between the two neighboring countries.
