This trip is intended to address issues related to trade, the Teesta River, and the Rohingya crisis, as Yunus is set to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping and various corporate executives. Yunus expressed optimism by stating, “Through this visit, our two countries’ relationship will become even closer.”

Discussions will focus on the Teesta River management and the ongoing plight of over 1.2 million Rohingya refugees sheltered in Bangladesh, who fled from Myanmar following violent crackdowns. The Bangladesh foreign ministry perceives China as a vital mediator in the efforts to repatriate these individuals. In terms of trade, China remains Bangladesh’s largest trading partner, having exported goods worth $22.9 billion in 2023 compared to Bangladesh’s exports to China, which were only $677 million.

This diplomatic venture is particularly significant for Bangladesh, especially in light of its strained relations with India following a recent political upheaval. India has implemented tighter visa restrictions for Bangladeshi nationals, saving exceptions primarily for medical emergencies. In response to this situation, China has initiated provisions for Bangladeshi patients by designating three major hospitals in Yunnan Province specifically for their care.

The visit follows a meeting between U.S. Army’s Pacific Deputy Commander Lt. Gen. Joel P. Vowell and Bangladeshi military officials, including Army Chief Gen. Waker-Uz-Zaman. Vowell emphasized the importance of U.S.-Bangladesh collaboration and explored the possibility of Bangladesh acquiring U.S. military equipment to enhance its defense capabilities.
