Porsche Driver Flees Petrol Station Without Paying, Faces Investigation

An incident in China has recently ignited fury on social media after a Porsche driver fled a petrol station without paying a 500 yuan (approximately Rs 5,906) bill. Occurring on March 12 at a highway petrol station between Hubei and Shaanxi provinces, the event was reported by the South China Morning Post. Surveillance footage captured the driver, operating a black Porsche valued at US$75,000, filling his tank before speeding away, notably without a license plate, which contravenes Chinese law.
The petrol station staff member, identified only as Song, publicly revealed the incident after the driver’s dishonest behavior caught significant attention online. According to Chinese regulations, new automobiles may be driven upon obtaining a temporary number plate, which involves displaying two paper documents on the vehicle’s windshields. In this case, Song inadvertently removed the barrier post, believing the driver would complete the transaction.
After witnessing the driver leave hastily without payment of the 502.29 yuan (US$70) charge, Song had to cover the cost herself as she was obligated to close all accounts before her shift concluded. With an earning of 2,800 yuan (US$390) in the previous month and two school-aged daughters to support, this situation was particularly challenging. However, her employer later compensated her for the loss on March 14.
Determined, Song shared the footage online to assist in identifying the suspect. The efforts proved successful as police located the driver in Shaanxi province four days later. Upon their arrival, the unidentified individual expressed remorse and settled the outstanding bill digitally, although law enforcement insisted he report to the police station for further investigation.
The man’s conduct is currently being investigated under China’s Public Security Administration Punishments Law, which allows penalties of up to 1,000 yuan (US$140) and a detention period of up to 15 days for failing to pay such dues. The inquiry is ongoing, amidst public outrage regarding his actions.
Social media commentators expressed their disbelief and concern about the man’s attempts to evade justice, with one user questioning, “What was he thinking? He cannot possibly be able to escape, with all the high-resolution surveillance cameras and police facial recognition technology.” Another commentator suggested that the police should not only penalize him for his failure to pay but also for operating the vehicle without a license plate.
This incident highlights issues related to accountability and the importance of adhering to legal regulations in vehicle operation and financial transactions. The swift response from both the petrol station staff and law enforcement resulted in the identification and subsequent accountability of the driver.
