India and China have made progress on resuming the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra in 2025 during discussions held between their Foreign Ministries. They emphasized promoting direct exchanges and bilateral relations, following positive developments since their leaders’ meeting in October 2024.

Recent consultations between India and China have led to significant advances concerning the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, scheduled to resume in 2025. This progress was announced by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) following discussions held in Beijing between officials from both nations, aimed at strengthening relations.

Gourangalal Das, the Joint Secretary for East Asia at the MEA, met with Liu Jinsong from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs to discuss the implementation of strategic directions previously established. They acknowledged positive developments in bilateral relations since the leaders of India and China convened in October 2024, including two meetings between the Foreign Ministers and a 23rd meeting of Special Representatives concerning boundary issues.

The two officials emphasized promoting people-to-people exchanges and agreed on facilitating resuming direct flights, enhancing media interactions, and commemorating the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations. They noted further progress on the modalities for the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra’s return in 2025 and expressed their commitment to maintaining an ongoing dialogue to foster stable relations.

During a prior meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC), both countries assessed the conditions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and expressed intentions to resume cross-border cooperation concerning rivers and the pilgrimage to Kailash Mansarovar.

The MEA characterized the discussions as taking place in a “positive” and “constructive” atmosphere. Both nations recognized that maintaining peace along the border is essential for developing overall bilateral relations. Various measures were explored to uphold decisions made during the Special Representatives’ previous meeting in December 2024.

Preparations for an upcoming Special Representatives meeting in India later this year were also a focal point of discussions, alongside a courtesy visit by Das to Assistant Foreign Minister Hong Lei. Following a January 2025 meeting led by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri in Beijing, both countries confirmed plans to resume the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra by the summer of 2025, reinstating direct air services in principle with detailed negotiations to follow soon.

The recent consultations between India and China signify a constructive approach to resuming the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra in 2025. Progress has been made in bilateral relations, highlighted by agreements on direct flights and enhancing people-to-people exchanges. Continued dialogue reflects both nations’ commitment to maintaining peace along their borders, facilitating stable interactions in the future.
