In recent years, there has been a growing enthusiasm among Cambodians for learning the Chinese language. Long Meikim, a 24-year-old civil servant studying at the Confucius Institute of the Royal Academy of Cambodia, epitomizes this trend. She has been learning Chinese for four months and can now engage in basic conversations. Meikim expressed her belief that proficiency in Chinese would enhance her job prospects and facilitate communication with Chinese nationals in Cambodia.

Meikim also appreciates the rich culture associated with the Chinese language. She noted her admiration for China’s modern cities, advanced technology, and beautiful landscapes, and she harbors aspirations of studying in China one day. Additionally, she emphasized the significance of strengthening Cambodia-China relations through cultural exchanges and hopes for increased Chinese investment in Cambodia’s economic growth.

Another student, Rorn Chanara, 20, is also motivated by the influx of Chinese investors and tourists. He believes that mastering the Chinese language will not only aid him in communication but could also secure well-paying employment in Cambodian companies associated with China. Chanara recognizes the Confucius Institute’s role in fostering Cambodian-Chinese relations and providing quality education in Chinese literature and culture.

Niu Li, the Chinese director of the Confucius Institute, highlighted the institution’s commitment to promoting Chinese language education and cultural exchange since its establishment in December 2009. The institute has evolved into a prominent cultural and educational entity in Cambodia, expanding its reach by establishing Confucius classrooms and language centers across several provinces, thereby accommodating a wide array of learners.

Niu further remarked on the impressive reach of the institute, with over 130,000 registered students and more than 8,000 new learners each year. He affirmed the institute’s goal to provide high-quality Chinese education to individuals from diverse backgrounds, including government officials and military personnel, thereby bridging cultural gaps between Cambodia and China.

The increasing interest among Cambodians to learn Chinese demonstrates the growing cultural and economic ties between Cambodia and China. As presented by students such as Long Meikim and Rorn Chanara, mastering Chinese not only opens up job opportunities but also enhances intercultural communication.
