He characterized the situation as a “festival of rumors” and suggested that certain factions aim to destabilize the nation through misinformation. “Since the interim government took office, there has been a festival of rumors in media and social media,” he remarked.
The speculation surrounding military intervention was fueled by an Indian outlet’s claim that the army might pressure President Mohammed Shahabuddin to declare a state of emergency or initiate a coup against Yunus. Furthermore, the report suggested the army was considering forming a national unity government, which contributed to the growing unease as army units were observed in Dhaka.
In light of these rumors, both Yunus and the army firmly denied any plans for a coup. Yunus claimed that the rumors were being spread through “all sorts of innovative ways,” while the Bangladesh army labeled the reports as “false and fabricated information.” The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) condemned the media outlet for circulating sensational narratives without verification.
To combat the rising tensions, Yunus called for national unity and awareness among citizens. He also requested assistance from the United Nations to halt the spread of misinformation. “We have sought the cooperation of the United Nations to prevent the propagation of these rumors and false theories. The Secretary-General of the United Nations has assured us of his cooperation in dealing with it,” he stated.
