Tesla Set to Launch in Saudi Arabia on April 10 Amid Sales Declines
Tesla announced its launch in Saudi Arabia on April 10, aiming to promote electric vehicles and showcase advanced technologies. This expansion follows significant sales declines in Europe and China. The launch aligns with Saudi Arabia’s target to transition its vehicle fleet to electric by 2030, supporting its broader economic diversification goals.
Tesla has officially announced its launch in Saudi Arabia, scheduled for April 10, as detailed on the company’s website. The event will take place in Riyadh, where Tesla aims to showcase its innovative offerings, including autonomous driving technology and its humanoid robot, Optimus. However, specifics regarding the availability of Tesla products for purchase have not been disclosed.
This launch comes amidst declining sales for Tesla in Europe, where the company has faced a 42.6 percent drop in car sales this year, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA). In China, Tesla’s sales of electric vehicles also fell by 49.2 percent year-on-year in February, reaching the lowest numbers since August 2022, attributed to increasing competition from local manufacturers, notably BYD.
Despite these challenges, Tesla is expanding its regional presence in the Middle East, building on its existing market in the UAE since 2017 and recently establishing a dealership in Qatar. Moreover, the company has signed a lease for its first showroom in Mumbai, India, as part of its global expansion strategy, while aiming to meet Saudi Arabia’s goal of transitioning 30 percent of vehicles in Riyadh to electric by 2030, thereby reducing the capital’s emissions by 50 percent.
The Kingdom’s ambitious plans also involve developing a domestic electric vehicle manufacturing sector to enhance local value and attract investments. With significant investment from Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund in Lucid Group, the country is positioning itself as a competitive player in the EV market, looking to complement Tesla’s presence in the region.
