Botswana to Host 2026 World Athletics Relays, First in Africa
Botswana is set to host the 2026 World Athletics Relays, marking a milestone as the first African nation to do so. The event will take place on May 2-3, 2026, in Gaborone, coinciding with Botswana’s 60th Independence celebrations. The country’s men’s 4x400m relay team, reigning world champions, has already begun preparations to defend their title.
Botswana has been awarded the rights to host the 2026 World Athletics Relays, marking a historical achievement as it becomes the first African nation to do so. This event will take place from May 2 to May 3, 2026, in Gaborone, the capital city. Minister of Sport and Arts, Jacob Kelebeng, expressed his excitement, acknowledging the hard work of the Botswana Athletics Association (BAA).
This hosting opportunity is particularly significant, as it will be Botswana’s first experience in hosting a senior world event in any sport, as well as the first time the World Athletics Relays are held on the African continent. The announcement was made by World Athletics President Sebastian Coe during a council meeting in Nanjing, China, solidifying Botswana’s place in the global athletics community.
The timing of the event aligns with Botswana’s 60th Independence celebrations in 2026, enhancing its significance. The Botswanan men’s 4x400m relay team has established itself as a formidable competitor, having won gold at the 2024 World Relays in the Bahamas and secured an Olympic silver medal. This team also boasts three world relay medals: one gold, one silver, and one bronze.
Furthermore, preparations are underway for the 2025 World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China. The team aims to defend their title, with reigning Olympic 200m champion Letsile Tebogo expected to participate. Botswana’s ascent in athletics is well recognized and celebrated as it prepares for this momentous occasion.
