On Friday, Chinese President Xi Jinping engaged in bilateral discussions with Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus. The focus of the talks included significant topics such as reducing interest rates on Chinese loans and collaborating on water resources management. Chief Adviser Yunus’s Press Secretary, Shafiqul Alam, characterized the meeting as ‘hugely successful’, emphasizing its comprehensive and constructive nature.

President Xi assured support for the interim government led by Professor Yunus, highlighting the importance of encouraging Chinese investments in Bangladesh and the relocation of Chinese manufacturing enterprises. In a personal note, he referenced his previous tours to Bangladesh and his experience with the country’s mangoes and jackfruits, expressing anticipation for their upcoming export to China.

The discussions between the two leaders revolved around strengthening bilateral ties, addressing trade and investment augmentation, agricultural collaboration, infrastructure development, renewable energy support, and the Rohingya crisis. Yunus urged China to play a pivotal role in fostering peace and stability for both nations.

Accompanying the Chief Adviser during the meeting were notable figures such as Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain and Bangladesh’s Ambassador to China, Md Nazmul Islam. The meeting took place at the People’s Great Hall, where Yunus commenced his four-day visit to China, intending to enhance relations between the two countries.

Professor Yunus was welcomed warmly upon his arrival in Beijing and participated in multiple events, including key discussions at the Boao Forum. His agenda includes a visit to Peking University, where he will receive an Honorary Doctorate and deliver a speech, along with granting interviews to major Chinese media outlets to discuss Bangladesh-China relations and other pertinent international issues.
